Who and what these terms cover

Northbridge Landmark is the name I, John O'Dell, publish my projects under. It isn't a company. In these terms, "I", "me" and "Northbridge Landmark" mean me, and "you" means the person using any of it. These terms cover:

  • this website, northbridgelandmark.com, and everything on it, including the Workbench (Flash, Starters, IDE, Translator, Packages and the desk pet guide) and the site's server;
  • FlasheIDE, at flasheide.com;
  • firmware, code and files I publish, here or on GitHub;
  • the builds and guides on the Builds tab;
  • the games and apps, in the browser and in the app stores, including Wordell, Brothers' Keeper, Pocket Chance and Zero Game.

By using any of these, you agree to these terms. If you're under 18, use them with a parent or guardian, who agrees to them for you. Where a project has its own licence, or an app store has its own terms, those apply as well; these terms add to them.

If I form a company to run these projects, it will take my place in these terms, and this page will name it.

No warranty: everything is as is

Everything these terms cover is provided "as is" and "as available", with all faults and without warranty of any kind. To the fullest extent the law allows, I disclaim all warranties, express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, title, non-infringement and accuracy. I don't promise that anything here will work with your board, computer or browser, will be free of errors, will be secure or available, or will be fixed when it's wrong.

Descriptions, pinouts, guides, board lists and test results are my best effort, and they can be wrong or out of date. Check them against the maker's own documentation. Nothing here is professional, legal, electrical or safety advice.

Flashing, the IDE and your boards

The Workbench and FlasheIDE talk to your hardware directly. Before you use them, know that:

  • Flashing replaces what's on the board, and Erase wipes all of it, including your files and settings. Neither can be undone.
  • A flash can fail partway through and leave a board that won't start. A loose cable, a computer going to sleep, a closed tab, or a bug in the browser, in a flashing library or in my code can each cause it. Most boards can be brought back through their bootloader, but not all of them, and doing so is up to you.
  • The wrong board, chip or firmware can stop a board working or damage it. The site guesses what's connected, and the guess can be wrong.
  • Backups are best effort. The "Back up first" step and the IDE's downloads can miss files or save them incomplete. Keep your own copies of anything that matters.
  • The IDE saves, overwrites, renames and deletes files on your board when you tell it to, and a bug could do it when you didn't mean to.
  • Code you run can do real things. Yours, a starter's, a package's, a translated script, or an example of mine can drive pins, motors, heaters, radios and power. It can damage the board or anything wired to it, or do something you didn't expect.
  • Simulations aren't your board. The Practice run, the emulators and the in-browser demos don't show what will happen on real hardware.

Use a board you can afford to lose, check your wiring and power, and back up first.

Firmware, builds and hardware

My firmware (tdeck, P4 SDR, the ESP32-P4 display tester, the desk pet and Zero Game) and my build guides are hobby projects. They're experimental, and nobody has tested or certified them for safety. Building and using hardware has real risks:

  • Lithium batteries, like the T-Deck Plus's, can swell, catch fire or explode if they're damaged, shorted, overcharged or left charging unattended. Follow the maker's instructions for charging and handling.
  • Soldering, cutting, wiring and mains power can cause burns, shocks, injuries and fires. Work safely, and supervise children.
  • Opening, modifying or reflashing a device can void its warranty.
  • Firmware can misbehave. It can drain a battery, run a device hot, or stop working after an update.

Parts, prices and shop links are for information only. Unless a page says otherwise, I'm not affiliated with, sponsored by or paid by the makers and sellers I mention, and I'm not responsible for their products.

Radios, scanners and keystroke tools

Some of my projects send or receive radio: LoRa and Meshtastic on the T-Deck, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth scanners on several builds, and the P4 SDR receiver with ADS-B. Radio and computer-misuse laws differ from place to place, and following them is your responsibility:

  • Transmit only on the frequencies, at the power and with the antennas allowed where you are, and set your device's region correctly.
  • Listening to some transmissions, or sharing what you hear, may be restricted where you are.
  • Use Wi-Fi and Bluetooth scanning and testing tools only on networks and devices you own, or have written permission to test.
  • Keystroke tools, such as DuckyScript and CircuitPython keyboard scripts from the Translator, or the tdeck dongle acting as a keyboard and mouse, can type anything into a computer. Use them only on computers you own or are allowed to use.

I don't encourage any unlawful use, and I'm not responsible for it. None of these builds is meant for navigation, emergencies or anything where safety depends on it. ADS-B, GPS and scanner readings can be wrong or missing. Features like locking your computer when you walk away are conveniences, not security, so don't rely on them.

Apps, games and downloads

  • The games are for entertainment. Pocket Chance, the Zero Game's card games and the Pack Opener use no real money and pay out nothing. Nothing in them has any cash value, and they aren't gambling or gambling advice. Pack Opener pulls are simulated and don't predict real booster packs.
  • The apps (Wordell, Brothers' Keeper and any others) are offered as is, under these terms. When you get one from the App Store or Google Play, that store's terms apply as well. For the App Store, that's Apple's Licensed Application End User License Agreement, unless the app's listing names another. Each app's privacy policy is on the Privacy page.
  • Downloads run on your own computer. Freeciv for Mac isn't notarized by Apple yet, so opening it means telling macOS to trust it. You decide that, at your own risk. Install software only if you're comfortable doing so, and keep backups.
  • Browser versions (Wordell, the Brothers' Keeper demo, the Pocket Chance emulator and Zero Game) can differ from the real thing, and they can lose your progress.

Code on GitHub

Code I publish is under the licence in its repository, for example GPL-3.0 for tdeck. Where a repository has no licence file, all rights are reserved: you can read the code, but you can't reuse it without my permission. Either way, that licence's own warranty and liability terms apply, and so do these. When a project's README links to this page, these terms cover that project.

Other people's software, services and names

The Workbench, FlasheIDE and the builds rely on other people's work, including MicroPython, CircuitPython, esptool-js and ESP Web Tools; firmware from Espressif, Raspberry Pi, Pololu and Edge Impulse; packages and starters from GitHub; and card data from Scryfall. The full list is under Credits. Firmware downloads pass through this site's server from their publishers. I don't control that software or those services and I'm not responsible for them; their own licences and terms apply. A matching checksum only means a file is the one its publisher released. It doesn't mean the file is safe or right for your board. A link to another site isn't an endorsement of it.

Product and company names, logos and trademarks belong to their owners. That includes Raspberry Pi, Espressif and ESP32, LilyGO, Waveshare, Apple, macOS, App Store, Google Play, Meshtastic and Magic: The Gathering. Naming them doesn't mean they made, sponsor or endorse anything here. The Pack Opener is unofficial Fan Content permitted under the Fan Content Policy. Not approved/endorsed by Wizards. Portions of the materials used are property of Wizards of the Coast. ©Wizards of the Coast LLC.

My own writing, art, comics, code and designs are © John O'Dell unless their licence says otherwise.

Limits on liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, I will not be liable to you or anyone else for any loss or damage of any kind arising out of or relating to anything these terms cover, or to your use of it or inability to use it. This includes damaged, erased or unusable boards, devices, computers, batteries or connected hardware; lost or corrupted files, code or data; fire, property damage or personal injury; fines or claims about how you used a radio, scanner or keystroke tool; lost time, profits, business or goodwill; and any direct, indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary or punitive damages. This applies whether the claim is based on contract, tort (including negligence), strict liability or any other theory, and even if I was told such damage was possible.

If I'm found liable anyway, my total liability for all claims together is limited to what you paid me for the thing the claim is about in the 12 months before the claim, or US$10 if you paid nothing.

Your part

You accept the risks. You choose to use these tools, firmware, guides and apps knowing the risks on this page. It's up to you to pick the right board and firmware, read the maker's documentation, back up your data, follow the law where you are, and decide whether something is safe to build or run.

You cover your own use. If someone makes a claim against me because of how you used anything these terms cover, or because you broke these terms or the law, you agree to pay my reasonable costs and losses from it, including legal fees, as far as the law allows.

The rest

  • Where the law says otherwise. Some places don't allow some of these limits, for example on implied warranties or on liability for injury caused by negligence. Where that's the case, those limits apply only as far as the law allows, and the rest of these terms still apply. Nothing here takes away rights the law says can't be taken away.
  • Changes. I may change these terms, or change, pause or remove anything they cover, at any time and without notice. The date at the top shows the latest version. Using anything after a change means you accept the new terms.
  • If a part doesn't hold. If any part of these terms can't be enforced, the rest still applies. If I don't enforce something, I haven't given it up.
  • The whole agreement. These terms, the Privacy page, and any licence or store terms mentioned above are the whole agreement between us about all this.
